Installation:

Red Cedar: Naturally contains its own preservative oils in the wood which make it highly resistant to rot, insects, and the effects of moisture.  There is no need to apply chemical preservatives.

Installation is easy: All you need is a hatchet, saw, post hole digger, about 8-10 pounds (one big shovel full) of fine gravel per post, and a short 2x4 for tamping dirt.

Call for electrical: Three days before you dig be sure to call your local Dig line or utilities.  They will send someone out to mark where lines and pipes are buried.

Digging: Holes should be dug 10' apart from center to center.  The two hole and three hole posts can be set 30" into the ground which will leave the same spacing between the ground and the bottom rail as there will be between the rails themselves.  Minimum recommended depth is 24".  It is best to dig holes 3-4" deeper than the set depth to make room for some gravel for drainage.

Setting Posts: The best way to set posts is to put the gravel in first, then place the post and fill in with dirt around it.  Overfill the hole with dirt to form a cone for drainage, and tamp dirt firmly to ensure stability.  Once posts are in, install the rails, trimming with a hatchet where needed.

Enjoy: There is no painting, staining, or preservative treatments or other maintenance required.  Over time the sun's rays will transform the color cedar color to a soft driftwood grey.

Why Cedar?

BEAUTY – Aesthetically, there really is no substitute for the natural beauty of Real Cedar. Imbued with decidedly crisp, yet superbly rich, tonal properties, Real Cedar can create sublime outdoor sanctuaries, embolden traditional home decor, provoke cutting-edge architecture and inspire innovative interiors. Imagine – all that dynamism packed into one beautiful building material! No wonder Real Cedar is a designer’s dream come true.

VERSATILITY – Western red cedar is pitch and resin-free. Which means it’s ideal for accepting and holding a wide range of beautiful finishes including elegant dark stains, shabby chic bleaches, traditional solid colours and naturally beautiful semi-transparents. Real Cedar also offers a wide range of lumber dimensions, surface textures and grades. Ergo, no matter what your desired effect is, Real Cedar’s got the wood for you.

SUSTAINABILITY – Independent studies prove that when it comes to environmental performance, natural wood is superior to synthetic products in every way. While other building materials generate greenhouse gasses, western red cedar actually removes greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere. And unlike brick, cement and composites, Real Cedar is renewable and biodegradable. All cedar forests are strictly managed to ensure that cedar remains one of the most sustainable building products available.  In fact, well less than 1% of available Cedar is logged in a given year, and we have more cedar trees today than in history.

Using Cedar for a basic 30'x16' deck saves over two metric tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to driving a car for an entire year.

When you choose cedar, you're choosing to be green.
